May Newsletter

Hey friends!

A new blog thing I am starting is a newsletter!  Ideally these will publish on the 1st of ever month but obviously that just didn’t happen this time!  I’m sure by reading the updates below you can figure out why I’ve been slacking on the blogging!

Buying a Home.

Ever since Josh and I got married I have fostered a passion for owning a home.  I am so happy to announce that our home ownership days are finally upon us!  We just purchased the most adorable cape cod home in Janesville, WI and close on June 2.  Why did I want a house so bad?  Not for your usual reasons.  My passion for wanting a home is really a passion for wanting a yard.  I’m also so excited about the tax benefits since we’re self employed and so excited to transform the space into something that’s all my own and blanketed by my design but it is the yard I was really after.  I wanted a fenced in and spacious yard so I can left dogs and kids run free and safe and so I can fully pursue homesteading.  What is homesteading?  Homesteading is fostering your own food sources.  For me, this is a garden.  Some day I would love to add chickens to the mix, but one step at a time!  My dreams for my garden is to feed my family with homegrown, organic fruits and veggies through most of the year.

Working at Mocha Moment.

I am a full time photographer.  But working out of my in-home studio can get pretty depressing.  When my husband is on tour I sometimes don’t see another person for days at a time.  A person starts getting weird when they don’t see another person after a few days.  Well there’s this coffee shop in town that is our favorite thing ever.  One day it occurred to me that I would love to work there a day or two a week as a means to get me out of the house and around people.  As timing would have it, mine was perfect!  I started work there a few days later and I am in love!  It is so fantastic to step away from editing and into the cozy environment of a coffee shop.  Not only does it get me face time with folks but it fuels my productivity back at home.

Having a baby.

I am 35 weeks pregnant and getting so excited to meet this little one kicking around in my tummy!  With a move on June 2 and a due date of June 11 with wedding photography season hitting full force right after my due date I am in for a crazy summer’s beginning!  It’s a good thing I’m comfortable flying by the seat of my pants 😉

BRAVA Magazine.

Sometimes I do freelance photography for publications.  I’ve been freelancing for BRAVA Magazine since October and recently started pursing other publications that can call on me to photograph more fun in the Madison area!

Wedding Season.

As mentioned briefly above, wedding season is knocking at my doorstep!  In the good ‘ol midwest, my work life is bonkers from May to December.  Come January the photographing and editing slows down enough so I finally get to address the list of To Do list pertaining to the business side of things.  After a brutally cold and wedding free 2014 so far I am excited to get back at it!  Starting June 22 my wedding photography madness begins!  Look out brides and grooms, this photographer is excited and energetic about serving you with buckets of creativity and passion!

Attention High School Seniors.

I am looking to expand my volume of high school senior portrait photography.  I am cheaper than the portrait studios I’m familiar with and I like to think I’m more fun!  Contact me at asunshinemoment@gmail.com (subject line “senior portrait photography” please) to get more info about booking me for your session.  I mean, only if you want to have fun during your portrait session though because that’s what I do!

And now, my friends, it is essential that I get my booty out the door to go sign some more papers for the house in order to also get to my home inspection on time!

Have a blessed day!

Exercising with Baby

Bemusings of a Baby Life

– 32 weeks pregnant

Just as it is important to eat right and eat well while pregnant it is important to not get lazy.  Let me tell you why…

Sure, there will be times when you feel downright terrible and it is acceptable to be a little lazy.  However, form too much of a habit with this and you’re not doing yourself or your baby any favors.  If you’re not taking care of yourself you will get heavier than you need to be which will make everything less comfortable and may make labor more difficult.  I tend to think of the 9+ months I’m pregnant as my time to train for the marathon of birth.

Since decided to start a family, note this is even before I found out I was actually pregnant, I have never been so motivated to intentionally “work out.”  I have never trained for a marathon nor do I have any desire to run in a race like that, but I am partaking in the marathon of birth; I intend to be as strong and conditioned for the big event as I can for the safety of me and my baby and for as speedy of a recovery postpartum as I can manage.  Here is what I’ve been working at…

  1. Conditioning

This has changed forms throughout the pregnancy.  I started out with running and eventually that got frustrating because baby bounced on my bladder.  I would tinkle before my run and still feel the urge to pee throughout the entire trip.  So I switched to the elliptical machines at the gym and now that it’s getting warmer out I take my dogs for long walks outside.  The elliptical is great because it’s easier on my knees and the bouncing is less jarring so my bladder can rest in peace.  Walks are ideal because I get fresh air, the dogs get some exercise, and its nice and easy on all my ligaments and joints.

  2. Stretching

Besides stretching for a while after I work on cardio I go to a yoga class at least once a week.  Yoga is incredible because I am getting body weight strength training (see below) and a good long stretch at the same time.  This stretching will not only aid me in delivery but it has significantly helped me move around without pregnancy aches and pains.  Before I started the class my back pain sat consistently at an 8 out of 10. I felt like an old person with all my muscles and bones shifting uncomfortably around trying to figure out how to carry the concentrated weight gain building at my midsection.

  3. Strength Training

Up until recently I was able to do sit ups with every work out.  But now I am officially at a stage of pregnancy when my abdominal muscles have migrated too far from their regular location to actually aid me in siting up at all.  I could still do sit ups, but they were no longer good for me because in order to achieve that movement it was other muscles that had to compensate for my out-of-place abs.  So now I stick to the body weight strength training I get with my yoga.  Body weight training is awesome because it tones your body according to your body’s needs.  If you’re into lifting weights, that’s always an option too.  I highly recommend yoga because you’re doing body weight strength training and stretching at the same time, two very important things for labor and delivery, but it’s not for everybody and something like Pilates or Zumba will do you good this way too.

  4. Chiropractor

So this isn’t exactly exercising but it is a great addition to my pregnancy wellness plan.  Back pain is very common and a big bummer in pregnancy.  With a once a week adjustment I move around still as if I’m not pregnant.  Before I started seeing my chiropractor by lower back pain almost knocked the breath out of me every time I changed positions and my hip joints were sliding in and out of place.  It is also said that since chiropractic work aligns the body as it should be, baby’s passage and orientation should be much more natural – if mom’s body is out of place it’s bound to be harder for baby to navigate through it.  If you think about it this way, it is much easier to sip out of a straight straw than one with a kink in it!

I highly recommend all pregnant women follow these four wellness tips.  I promise you’ll be glad you did!

Senior Portraits Post Cards

This year I made a bold move.  I absolutely love photographing Senior portraits.  So, in an effort to gain more exposure among such folk I printed post cards and sent them out to the list of Juniors at Milton High School provided to me by their lovely secretary.  I love how these cards turned out!  Now I’m just excited to see how many Seniors love them too!

Photo 1:  My 8MO session with Scarlett!

Photo 2:  With the nice weather I opened the windows in the studio… I look over to see Haley trying to get as close to said window without falling off the couch.

Photo 3:  A spread of my photography in BRAVA Magazine‘s April issue!

Photo 4:  BRAVA Magazine gifts all their freelance photographers an ad once a year.  Mine ran in the April issue!

Photo 5: Our house is a busy place with Josh hosting music lessons and me conducting my in-home photography studio.  I made this sign so I can welcome his students into the house without having to drop my work to go answer the doorbell.  I figure this will be particularly necessary when we have a dozing baby!  You wake the baby, you die! Just kidding.

Photo 6:  I also made this palette board map art this weekend.  Since we can’t paint our walls in our apartment I wanted to get the baby’s colors incorporated into our space somehow!

Photo 7:  An attempt at a prego selfie (31 weeks pregnant).  All you folks who have mastered the prego selfie, I don’t know how you do it!  I find it very troublesome standing sideways while holding the camera in a place that won’t block anything and still manage to snap the picture without dropping my phone…

Wedding Rack Card

I connected with The Armory in Janesville and am now one of their featured wedding photographers!  I chose to connect with this venue in particular because I love the charm of the brick, historic building and I simply won’t beat the proximity to my home!

This new connection meant I needed to get some materials printed for them to put in the folders they give their couples.  I chose this simple card as to give these couples the eye candy and some basic information without overwhelming them.  The idea is that if they like what they see on the card they will inquire with questions or to book me for their wedding.

Bring it on The Armory brides and grooms!  Looking forward to connecting with you!
