FAQ

FAMILY

We are five:  Me (Kaia), the hubby (Joshua), our baby daughter (Maisy), and our two smallish and abundantly loving dogs Haley and Sam.

What do you do?

I am a full time professional wedding and portraits photographer based in Janesville, WI (a Sunshine Moment) and a full time mom.

What does your husband do?

He is a professional musician and plays in a band called Citizen Way.  When he’s not on the road with Citizen way he teaches music lessons out of our home (drums, piano, guitar) and leads worship at Central Christian Church and The Connecting Church.

LIFESTYLE

Why are you a Christian?

My story is a long one as I’ve been a Jesus-freak since I was still knee high but here’s the short of it.  He’s done nothing but prove His love for me over and over.  I am blessed beyond measure and it is absolutely ALL a give from God!  He is my compass, my best friend, my counselor, my comfort, and my provider.  He is my everything and the reason I love to love.

Why are you a vegetarian?

Several years ago I started a journey following my convictions about how I treat the environment.  My conviction grew into a passion to serve God with my lifestyle by being a good steward to our planet.  This started with becoming a vegetarian.  I choose to eat meat and other animal products (dairy, eggs, honey, etc) only when I know the animal has been raised lovingly.  But my choices go far beyond this.  All of my choices as a consumer go through my “good stewardship” lens, from cloth diapering, to buying laundry detergent, to homeopathic health care for my family, to the products I put on my skin, to the furniture I buy, etc.  The list goes on and on and I could talk to you passionately about all my wonderfully life giving, planet saving, and all around amazing things I’ve found.  To name a few brands (so much of what I do I can’t give you a brand name for though since I make it):  Seventh Generation (#1 rated brand for ecological and sustainable cleaning – personal faves are toilet paper and dish soap), Norwex (deep green clean), Dr Bronners (all-in-one soap), Young Living (essential oils for natural healing and wellness [member #2530570, I’m happy to walk you through getting started with YL]), SoftBums (cloth diapers), BumGenius (cloth diapers), Rumparooz (cloth diapers), Bamboobies (reusable nursing pads and nursing tanks), Sam’s Natural (more manly smelling but I love it, my favorite natural deodorant)…

WORK

How did you get into photography?

When I was little my parents gave me a boxy neon green camera.  I dabbled with that little bugger. Then they bought me a point-and-shoot.  After that it was hard to catch me without my camera close at hand.  In high school I was known for always having my camera on me, especially since my parents took it upon themselves to upgrade me to my very own amateur DSLR.  I got involved in the yearbook and spent the better part of my senior year flocking to photo shoots and events to take photos to be printed in our award winning year book.  Little did my parents know they would start a passion that would last a lifetime by buying me cameras!  I’m so thankful to two parents to gave me the world by feeding into my passion wholeheartedly and showing it with their support as well as their wallet.

What camera do you use?

I have my two Canon 5D MarkIIs that I love!  I’m   We’ve also got a Holga and a couple of film cameras, but they’re not developed often, so… you won’t see much of them.

What lenses do you use?

I LOVE my lenses!

EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM for everything I can from portraits to weddings – the glass on this lens makes for the most beautiful colors and creamy blur.

EF 50MM f/1.2L USM for portraits and family photos at weddings.

EF 35mm f/1.4L USM I use this lens the most – a wider lens for landscapes but it also isn’t so wide to distort portraits.

EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens I particularly whip this out for ring shots but it is also a gorgeous portrait lens.

EF 135mm f/2L USM for weddings when I need some more reach.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM… my versatile, take-with-me everywhere lens.

How do you edit your photographs?

Lightroom from start to finish!  Couldn’t recommend this program more.  Quick and easy editing flow.

I want to get into photography, where should I start?

Well that’s a good question… a long one though!  Perhaps I need to write a blog about it 🙂
